Diversity, fairness and inclusion are words that are quickly coming to mean a lot in the gaming industry. At GamesBeat Summit Next 2022, a panel of experts gathered to discuss what each aspect of DEI means to companies in the gaming industry and how best to implement it.

The panelists explained that diversity and inclusion are two different things and that just because a company serves one company does not necessarily mean it serves the other. “Diversity is really like who’s in the room, right? Count all your heads. Inclusion is about making all those heads count — you’re in the room, you feel valued…. We all like to be We think we are all human, all the same, and treat everyone equally. But that simply isn’t true. People walk through the world very differently. Where in the world they start varies greatly. So when you activate those two things, I hope you can get there. to a fair place.

Miguel Doherty, Executive Producer at Puga Studios added, “Studies show that a lot of people can see a company that’s diverse but it’s not inclusive. They have the people but they don’t actually listen to everyone. I think understanding these core concepts makes all the difference when you aim for justice as a whole.” .

“How” from DEI

The panelists also discussed how to create a studio with DEI in mind. Aletheia O’Neil, co-founder of Tether Studios, said, “If you’re trying to reach a diverse, global audience, I think bringing in those different perspectives early on helps. It helps shape that, and if that’s been the mindset of the studio early on, You will increase your chances of success.”

O’Neill added: “You need to hire the right people, and the best way to start is by targeting people who are different from you and have different perspectives. People naturally tend to surround themselves with people who are similar to them. If you end up doing that, you have a whole team of people who think the same.” method. You’ll end up with a very tight product.”

Doherty said efforts to be more diverse and inclusive can help retain talent and spread positive word of mouth for companies. “We’ve heard a lot of people say, ‘I like to stay here because this is a very safe environment for me.'” It could be a woman or a trans person. That’s been a very healthy thing for us in terms of culture and keeping these people. And a lot of them are getting more involved because of that.”

Of her recent efforts at Riot, Dingle said, “People know [DEI] It is important. They know it’s critical to business. They just want help about the ‘how’. And that’s what I’m there for. I will help with the “how” because I have no doubt that people will help me lead this work. It’s not just about the DEI people. Everyone should help with this.”
